Tips on How to Choose the Right Carpet for Your Home

Posted on

When picking a carpet, it can be hard to know what colour and style to select and how to blend the carpet with the rest of the room decor. For some tips on how to go about it, read on.

Neutral Tones

One approach is to lay neutrally toned carpet, which blends into the background and provides a canvas for you to design around. Thus, you can paint the walls a rich green or place a ruby-red statement sofa in the room without the effect becoming overpowering. The carpet won't dominate and compete for attention.

Additionally, neutral flooring harmonises with a broader array of accent and secondary colours than a brighter carpet which is more likely to clash. In this way, a subdued carpet offers design freedom, as you can redecorate in the future and not be limited when choosing a new colour scheme.

You can also use neutrally toned carpet to make your room feel more spacious. Walls often feature colours like beige, grey and cream, for example. If you install carpet in a similar shade, you'll create flowing lines around the entire room. The smooth transition between surfaces reduces visual contrast, which typically evokes a sense of spaciousness. Subdued and neutral colours also tend to feel calmer than vibrant hues. Adding a touch of grey to any colour typically makes it more soothing.

Bolder Colours

Rather than spreading a neutral colour across your floor, you might consider going with a bold carpet in green, red or orange, for example. If you take this approach, keep the walls and ceiling relatively neutral. However, to tie the carpet with the rest of the decor, repeat its bright hue as accents. For example, if you install bright green carpet, use similarly toned green cushions or a lampshade or picture. That way, the room will have a sense of cohesion. The carpet won't simply be an odd colour, standing out on its own and not be repeated anywhere else in the design.

Textures

You can also choose a carpet with a focus on its texture. For example, install a patterned carpet with both cut and loop pile. Alternatively, lay a plush long-fibre cut pile during your carpet installation. Then, redecorate the rest of the room to emphasise texture. For this, incorporate a wicker chair or bookcase stacked with books. Other tactile exteriors include a marble coffee table, a granite fireplace or a grainy timber dining table full of knots and patterns.
