4 Things to Consider When Choosing New Carpeting

Posted on

If you are thinking about putting new carpet in your home, you have a lot of options to choose from. Not only do you need to pick the color of the carpeting, but there are different styles, carpet piles, and prices for the carpet. Here are some important things to consider when choosing your new carpeting.

Select a Style of Carpeting

Start choosing the carpeting by selecting a type of carpet based on its material. For example, there are sisal carpets that are synthetic and try to mimic other types of carpeting, such as wool. These are often extremely soft and tend to be more affordable. These can come in different looping styles. There is saxony carpet with a soft curl or twist to them, and wilton carpet with its durability. Wilton is good for high-traffic spaces and outdoors, like a patio or sunroom. Choose velvet if you like a dense and soft carpet or frieze for a textured carpet.

Know the Different Piles

When you are looking at the different types of carpeting styles, you will notice that many of them are defined by their pile. The pile is considered cut or uncut. When loops are made with yarn to make carpet, some of them are cut at angles, while others are left as they are. This changes the look and feel of the carpet. Berber carpeting or carpeting labeled as loop pile is uncut carpet pile. By leaving the loop as it is, the carpet is more durable and usually low-maintenance. Cut carpet is softer on the feet and can provide different types of textures.

Consider the Carpet's Maintenance

The look and feel of the carpet isn't the only thing to think about. You also need to consider if the carpet is high or low-maintenance. Take a look at the cleaning instructions when shopping around at different carpet retailers. This can give you an idea of how much work it is going to be. For example, delicate carpets need a special type of vacuum attachment, while wool carpet needs steam cleaning if there are stains.

Bring Samples to Match the Room

Finally, bring some samples of decor items in your home so you can match the look, color and style to the carpeting. For example, see if you can bring some fabric from couch cushions or a sample of a curtain or fabric from your sofa. You might be able to find swatches of these colors and fabrics so you can bring them along while you shop.

Keep these tips in mind as you visit local carpet retailers, and you'll be able to select the perfect carpet option for your home.
